Job Description

6000! That is the number of associates in the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). This division is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

The PK Sciences / Translational Modeling & Simulation group is embedded within the Translational Medicine department of NIBR. Our goal is to enable quantitative approaches to rigorous decision making, from target identification to first-in-human studies and beyond. Novartis has a broad pipeline of therapies across a wide number of disease areas. We are seeking a curious and proactive modeler to apply computational methods to drive the design, characterization, and delivery of low molecular weight (small molecule) compounds. These include reversible or covalent inhibitors and modulators, targeted protein degraders, soft drugs, and half-life extended compounds. Our group is growing, and we hope you will join us as we use computational modeling to generate new insights with both forward and reverse translational approaches.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
• Act as the Translational M&S representative on several programs by developing and executing modeling strategies, collaboratively contributing to project team discussions.
• Build and apply PK/PD, quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP), and physiologically based PK (PBPK) models that link drug pharmacology, mechanism(s) of action, safety, and biological outcomes.
• Support the selection of molecules for efficient lead optimization and hypotheses testing by identification of pharmacokinetic liabilities.
• Develop a modeling-based strategy for preclinical projects and lead the project team discussions on the human dose prediction prior to candidate selection.
• Contribute to programs across therapeutic modalities (beyond small molecules), and across disease indications, as needed. Novartis has a broad portfolio with hundreds of drug discovery and clinical development projects and you will have opportunities to grow and develop.
• Proactively seek opportunities to increase the impact and awareness of translational modeling through communications with internal and external audiences. You will serve as a M&S subject area expert across PK Sciences and NIBR initiatives and as a Novartis representative in external consortia.
• Mentor others and create a constructive culture within own scientific expertise area.

Diversity & Inclusion / EEO

The Novartis Group of Companies are Equal Opportunity Employers and take pride in maintaining a diverse environment. We do not discriminate in recruitment, hiring, training, promotion or other employment practices for reasons of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital or veteran status, disability, or any other legally protected status. We are committed to building diverse teams, representative of the patients and communities we serve, and we strive to create an inclusive workplace that cultivates bold innovation through collaboration and empowers our people to unleash their full potential.

Minimum Requirements

What you will bring to the role:
• Ph.D. in biology, pharmacology, bioengineering, biophysics, or a related field with 8+ years of industry experience. Candidates with a master’s degree and 12+ years of industry experience will be considered.
• Extensive industry experience in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD), quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP), and/or physiologically based PK (PBPK) modeling of low molecular weight compounds is required.
• Expert level proficiency in core modeling fundamentals is required, including scripting languages (e.g., MATLAB, R), construction of ordinary differential equation (ODE) models, parameter estimation, and data visualization. Experience with standard PBPK software packages, like GastroPlus, SimCYP, and/or PK-SIM is required.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate modeling results to a multidisciplinary audience for collaborative work and to facilitate strategy and decision-making.
• Fluent in English (oral and written).

There are three positions available, and candidates can be considered for all (345275BR, 345276BR, 350203BR).
